What is Juneteenth?
Every year on June 19, people around the world commemorate one of the most significant historical events in the United States: the emancipation of African Americans from slavery.
It was on that date in 1865 in Galveston, Texas, when a Union general read federal orders informing the more than 250,000 enslaved people in The Lone Star State that the Civil War had concluded and slavery was abolished in the United States.
Juneteenth – the combination of “June” and “Nineteenth” – is the oldest and most revered celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. The observance also is lesser known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day and Cel-Liberation Day.
